Common Cold Remedies: Myth's Tested

As the weather turns, we welcome not just the cooler air but higher chances for catching the common cold. What really works for colds? With the help of The Mayo Clinic, we investigated what works and what doesn't when it comes to feeling better.

What works:
-Water: helps to prevent dehydration which can leave you feeling down and fatigued.
-Saline nasal sprays: help to dry up mucous and relieve some congestion helping you dodge headaches and breathe easier.
-Chicken soup: acts as an anti-inflammatory and can help speed up the movement of mucous.

What doesn't:
-Antibiotics: antibiotics only combat bacteria. A cold is a virus. Simply put: treating colds with antibiotics is not appropriate.
-Zinc: helps within 24 hours of the onset of your cold symptoms. There is no strong evidence that it helps throughout the duration of a cold.

Did you know that being at a healthy weight can also have an impact on how quickly you recover from the common cold? Our Dr. supervised programs can help. Nervous about commitment? Don't be. We don't ask you to sign a contract. Here at Access Medical Weight Management and Obesity Treatment Clinics, we just want to see you succeed.
