Probiotics: What They Do and How They Can Help

Probiotics seem to be everywhere! They're advertised in the supplement aisle, granola section and even with the beverages. Like many other supplements, they can have you confused and frenzied as to which one(s) to choose. Leave it to us to clear the air to help you clean your gut!

Probiotics provide health benefits when taken in adequate amounts. It is estimated that 60%-70% of your immune cells are found in your intestines. This flora or "good bacteria" can help your body protect itself against pathogens, helping you dodge a virus or bacterial infection.

Prebiotics promote bacterial growth within your intestine. Put simply, prebiotics help to promote the growth of probiotics.

Synbiotics are bacteria that contain both probiotics and prebiotics.

There are a few things to consider if you feel you'd benefit from the use of a pro-, pre-, or synbiotic:
1. Always consult with your physician before starting any supplement.
2. Consider what you're trying to treat: bloat, constipation, yeast overgrowth, etc. Check out this website from The American Gastroenterological Association to help you determine which strands and species
3. Shelf life. Be a smart shopper! Read the ingredient label, Use By date and storage recommendations.
